Abusing school choice

Dear Colleagues,

School choice (creating "competition" between schools by allowing students choice as to where they attend school) may or may not be a good idea but there is no doubt it has encouraged the development of lots of nifty mathematical ideas related to two-sided and one-side markets. However, some systems, no matter how fairly they may be designed can be subverted, as seems to have been the case in DC as described in this article:
