Relatively recently, the NY Times has had Steven Strogatz as a blogger tied to its web pages:

My favorite blog is one written by Gil Kalai:

While Gil's blog treats quite advanced mathematics he often has fascinating educational stories as well as issues about applications. Recently, he has solicited comments about when it makes sense to buy insurance for a toaster.
Also, notice that there is a list of active mathematics blogs that you can access from Kalai's blog, by clicking on the links along the side. There are links to blogs of Tim Gowers, Algorithmic game theory, etc..
