School closures

Postby Joseph Malkevitch » Tue Oct 24, 2017 11:59 am

Dear Colleagues,

Many school systems have used school closures as a way to improve education and make schools more "competitive." I strongly question if K-12 public schools should be run as businesses since it seems to me very problematical to determine how effective schools are given the complex picture of the way schools get funded, the economics of the students they serve, teacher salaries, qualifications and training, and other variables.

Here is a recent report about school closures:

http://credo.stanford.edu/pdfs/Closure_ ... lume_I.pdf

and an analysis of this report by NPEC:

Public schools should work to make sure that all schools are serving their students well and not use students as if they were pawns in a chess game.

Best,

Joe
