Dear Colleagues,
Often there have been criticisms of the projects that government money gets spent on - frivolous research. Karen Saxe has some useful thoughts about this issue including the example of the Gale/Shapley Marriage Theorem which some thought was not worth the money that was put into working on this circle of ideas. Not only is this important theoretical mathematics but it has provided to be useful in an amazing range of applications.
