Cosmological constant

Dear Colleagues,

The 20th century and beyond has seen many attempts to use mathematics to understand the origins and evolution of the universe. In some of these attempts there is reference made to a "cosmological" constant whose variation in size results in rather different scenarios for the evolution of the the universe with time. Here is a historical look at the cosmological constant in the equations and at the data that have been used to "adjust" the equations.
