Failed medical trials

Dear Colleagues,

Many Americans, and more generally people world wide, die young or suffer greatly from a variety of genetic and infectious diseases. Science tries to develop treatment for these ailments, and mathematics and computer science are often used in the design of "trials" to determine if new treatments are really safe, and how they compare with existing treatments (placebos). There are many issues about which ailments get attention and which don't for potential development of new treatments. Often it seems as if economics and not the well being of the public drives what is done.
