Life expectancy

Postby Joseph Malkevitch » Fri Dec 22, 2017 2:52 pm

Dear Colleagues,

Statistics typically aims to try to tell the story behind a data set with a view to being accurate. Students often find statistical factoids an entry point into thinking about the world from a mathematical point of view.

One issue that interests us all is how long our lives are likely to last. Here is an article about life expectancy in the United States. ... econd-year

The article includes the following quote:

Heart disease was the leading cause of death for 2016, followed by cancer, unintentional injuries such as drug overdoses and car crashes, chronic lower respiratory diseases including asthma, and stroke. Rounding out the top 10 causes of death were Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, kidney disease and suicide.

If you have an interest in health statistics take a look at this site:

Lots of interesting data stories here.
