Calculus Escalator

Postby Joseph Malkevitch » Mon Sep 12, 2011 9:00 pm

Dear Colleagues,

I think Sol Garfunkel and David Mumford have done a great service by calling attention to concerns they have with the consequences of the CCSS-M in their NY Times Op-Ed article. As they point out the issues here are very complex. Below is a link to a pdf file where I comment on what I call the Calculus Escalator. This is metaphor for me that suggests that the CCSS-M are more concerned with issues involving the training of STEM majors than with the "optimal" curriculum for all K-12. This essay oversimplifies the complex issues, too, but I hope it gives some inkling of my concerns.
